Canada Is Boosting Immigration to 350,000 in 2021

The Canada government announced on October 31, 2018, that it is increasing immigration to 350,000 in 2021, primarily in economic programs to address skills shortages and gaps in the labour market.

Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen discussed Canada's three-year immigration plan and said that "economic immigration is badly needed in areas across the country that are short on workers and long on older residents:"

This plan is making us very competitive in the global market. It enables us to continue to be competitive, it enables us to continue to present Canada as a welcoming country and to position us to continue to be (a leader) in skills attraction.

Immigration lawyer Evelyn Ackah says Canada needs more qualified workers to move to Canada and help grow our economy:

This plan is to make us very competitive in the global market. It enables us to continue to be competitive and to present Canada as a welcoming country for skilled professionals. If you want to move to Canada, apply now as a temporary foreign worker via Canada's Global Talent Stream, which promises a 2-week fast-track for qualified applicants, then look at your options to become a permanent resident.

What Is Economic Immigration?

Economic immigrants are people who move to Canada for career opportunities and want to live and work in Canada to improve their living standards. Canada has put into place programs to increase economic immigration in order to improve Canada's economy due to the aging workforce. Economic immigrants are admitted to Canada based on their education, skills and work experience.

According to the 2018 Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration, nearly 50% of Canada's economic immigrants are 25 to 64 years old and have a bachelor’s degree or higher. The statistics In 2017, the top five jobs for immigration applicants were information systems analysts and consultants, software engineers, computer programmers and interactive media developers, financial auditors and accountants, and administrative assistants. The report states that the industries that stand to benefit from immigrant workers include health care, science, transport and equipment, and other skilled trades.
