Canada announced on Tuesday, January 3 that it welcomed 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said in a news release that Canada has reached its record-breaking goal of welcoming over 430,000 immigrants in 2022, beating the previous immigration record set in 2021, when Canada welcomed more than 401,000 new permanent residents. Before that, the previous immigration record was set in 1913, when Canada welcomed more than 400,000 newcomers, according to Statistics Canada data. Minister Fraser said in the news release:

“Today marks an important milestone for Canada, setting a new record for newcomers welcomed in a single year. It is a testament to the strength and resilience of our country and its people. Newcomers play an essential role in filling labour shortages, bringing new perspectives and talents to our communities, and enriching our society as a whole. I am excited to see what the future holds and look forward to another historic year in 2023 as we continue to welcome newcomers.”

– The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

The news release contains important facts about immigration and Canada's labour force:

  • Immigration accounts for almost 100% of Canada's labour force growth. Roughly 75% of Canada's population growth comes from immigration, mostly in the economic category. By 2036, immigrants will represent up to 30% of Canada's population, compared with 20.7% in 2011.
  • Canada's aging population means that the worker-to-retiree ratio is expected to shift from 7 to 1 50 years ago to 2 to 1 by 2035.
  • Immigrants account for 36% of physicians, 33% business owners with paid staff, and 41% of engineers.

It is hard enough in the normal course of business to obtain permanent resident status in Canada. Imagine the difficulty in gaining that status with a 36 year old developmentally disabled daughter. That was our experience. My husband had been recruited for the C.E.O. position at the Calgary Public Library. Even the process to obtain temporary work permits for all three of our family members took some time and effort. The Ackah Firm was with us every step of the way. They gave us good advice, managed the paperwork and kept my husband’s employer informed. They were also proactive by insisting that we get on with the process of permanent residency in a timely fashion. Again their experience and knowledge paid off. They utilized other legal expertise to make a case that our daughter would not be a burden to the Country or the Province. They were respectful of our point of view that despite her disabilities she had always been an active and engaged member of the community. We were pleased that permanent residence for parents and child came through fully six months before the temporary status expired.
