Sonia is an experienced US attorney with over 10 years of private practice work representing corporations and individuals in labour and employment matters. During the course of her legal practice, she became aware of the business needs that her technology based corporate clients had in identifying a highly skilled talent pool and recruiting qualified foreign nationals to work in the US. In Calgary, Sonia has worked at one of the Big 4 accounting firms supporting the US Business Immigration group and at a boutique immigration law practice assisting in the preparation of US employment-based nonimmigrant visas (NIVs), as well as spousal sponsorship applications. Over the years, Sonia has prepared and successfully submitted NIV applications, such as TNs for NAFTA professional workers, intracompany transfers of executives or managers (L-1(a)s & L-1(b)s, respectively), H-1b applications for the temporary employment of foreign workers in specialty occupations, O-1 visas for individuals with extraordinary ability or achievement in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) for automotive applications and/or robotics, as well as treaty investor or E-2 visa applications. As a member of the Ackah Business Immigration Law Team, Sonia looks forward to assisting the firm in providing sound, timely and practical advice to companies and individuals with US immigration and Canadian immigration issues.
Sonia obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and French studies from Fordham University, in New York city, and her JD from Rutgers University School of Law, in Newark, New Jersey. She became licensed to practice law in Texas in 1997. While in Texas, she worked as a Briefing Attorney at the Federal District Court level and was an associate with the global law firm of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. Sonia became an immigrant herself when she and her family moved to Western Canada in 2011. She arrived in Calgary with a work permit and eventually received her landed immigrant status in 2014. Sonia knows first-hand the hurdles that a new immigrant encounters when moving into a new country. Sonia has successfully pursued accreditation of her US law degree through the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, NCA process. She has recently been admitted as a Student-at-Law with the Law Society of Alberta and is currently fulfilling her articling requirements at the firm. Sonia hopes to be called to the Alberta Bar in the very near future.
Sonia is originally from Puerto Rico and is a native Spanish speaker. For the last four years, Sonia has served in the executive committee of the Business and Professional Women of Calgary, and in that role, has participated as a speaker at the Women’s Leadership Conference held annually at the University of Calgary.
