Live-in Caregiver Program Ending November 29, 2019

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced on February 2, 2018, that they will stop accepting applications for the Live-in Caregiver Permanent Residence program on November 29, 2019. If you do not have two years of full-time work experience as a caregiver before the program closes, they will not be eligible to apply.

The Minister of Immigration and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen, responded to recent criticism about ending the program, with the following statement:

“Let us be clear. Our government is committed to family reunification. There are & will always be a pathway to PR for caregivers under our govt. These two 5 year pilot programs are undergoing an assessment to determine improvements to allow better access to PR for caregivers.”

The recent announcement by IRCC about the ending of the program will not have an impact on those who have already submitted their permanent residence applications. However, those who are just arriving in Canada as caregivers may not be eligible to apply by the deadline.
