Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has adopted a new forward-looking processing time for some Permanent Residence Application.
On August 9, 2018, IRCC announced that as of July 31, 2018 they will be using an improved method to calculate processing times for some new Permanent Residence Applications. The new method of calculating processing times is based on a forward-looking approach rather than estimates based on historical data.
The processing times will now be projected and indicate how long most applications are expected to take, based on several factors, including the number of current applications waiting to be processed and the volume of admissions allowed each year, under the multi-year immigration levels plan.
Previously, all permanent residence application processing times were based only on historical date and showed how long it took to process 80% of applications in the past year. While this method was generally accurate, it did not account for various other factors. The new method of calculating processing times is promised to be even more accurate for clients.
The new projected processing times will apply to any applications received on or after July 31, 2018 and will apply to the following types of Permanent Residence application:
- Sponsoring a parent or grandparent
- Provincial Nominees (Non-Express Entry Stream)
- Quebec Skilled Workers
- Start-Up Visas; and
- Humanitarian and Compassionate Cases.
The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship has commented on the update to processing methods, saying: “Improving the service experience of IRCC clients has been a significant point of focus for my department in recent years. This update is an important one to ensure our immigration processing times are as accurate as possible and to help clients better prepare to move to Canada if their application is approved”.
