A new study by tech company MaRS reports that 53% of surveyed tech companies in Toronto experienced increased interest from US applicants in 2017. 82% of the international applicants were from the US, reports Business Insider.
Canada has been actively recruiting skilled and educated immigrants to help build the Canadian economy and create jobs.
'Recent changes to United States immigration policies have made Canada a very attractive option for high-tech immigrants. Many highly skilled and educated people who would have previously desired to move to Silicon Valley now see Canada as a desirable destination,' said Calgary immigration lawyer Evelyn Ackah.
In recent months Canada's immigration system IRCC has implemented the Global Skills Strategy to help Canadian employers get high skilled workers their businesses need. US tightening of immigration rules at all levels including H-1B visas for technical workers has increased Canada's attractiveness as a destination for tech firms and tech workers.
Canada has strong job market and is actively seeking skilled foreign workers who can help build our economy and grow our nation. Many highly educated and trained immigrants move to Canada to become permanent residents in less than 6 months through our Express Entry system.
The US Department of Homeland Security is proposing rules changes to eliminate work permits for spouses of some US visa holders. Canada tech could get another boost if the United States rescinds work permits for spouses of H-1B visa holders, says immigration lawyer Evelyn Ackah.
